Competency standards for SWM
3R Initiative at LIRNEasia has been promoting competency standards in the solid waste management sector. A curriculum for the vocation of solid waste operational assistant has already been developed according to the draft code of competency standards that was developed by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission.

Connecting local authorities to share knowledge in SWM
3R Initiative at LIRNEasia facilitates launching of blog sites for local authorities as a means of sharing information. The 3R newsletter focusing local authorities too aims the same goal and we welcome contribution of SW managers from local authorities by providing articles.

Practicing 3R
The 3R Initiative together with Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association is in a process of making the younger generation to practice 3R. Provincial level awareness programmes are conducted on practicing 3R. With various kinds of programmes guides are encouraged to practice 3R at home and school and every guide is to disseminate the 3R massage to their neighboring houses.

Awareness progammes
The girl guides in each province carry out awareness programmes in religious places to reduce nonbiodegradables coming in to waste stream in such religious places towards recycling. The strategy makes the girl guides to be more waste concerned and expose them to conducting awareness programms.
